Kathmandu, April 5

Today, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba will inaugurate a dry port in Kathmandu’s Chobhar district. The port will open at 2:00 p.m., per the schedule.

The contract to develop the dry port in 18 months at a cost of Rs 1.67 billion was signed in June 2018 with the World Bank’s loan aid. However, due to local objections, the project’s foundation stone was only set after eight months due to environmental pollution, compensation, and other factors. The deadline was extended for the final time until mid-July to finish the project, which had been delayed for 13 months owing to local opposition and the Covid epidemic.

According to the Nepal Inter-Model Transport Development Committee, the dry port built on the site of the Himal Cement factory in Chobhar as part of the Nepal-India Regional Trade and Transit Project is now ready for use.

The dry port, which covers a large area of 228 ropanis, is planned to clear products arriving
from foreign countries and deliver them straight to Kathmandu.
