25 Weibo accounts suspended or terminated for using air tragedy as a publicity stunt for marketing purposes

A total of 25 accounts on China’s social media platform Weibo were suspended or terminated on Monday for making fun of the crash of China Eastern Boeing 737 flight or using the tragedy as a publicity stunt for marketing purposes.

According to a statement released by Weibo on Monday evening, while netizens were following the development of the accident and prayed for the victims, some individual users mocked or ridiculed the disaster or made other improper remarks about the tragedy, which the platform will resolutely oppose and seriously deal with.

According to the Weibo Community Convention and other related regulations, 25 accounts which violated the regulations will be banned for 30 days or permanently terminated depending on the extent of their violations.

The platform reminded netizens to participate in discussions and deliver opinions rationally and to avoid publishing content that lacks empathy or spreads false information.
