In a month, the customs department received Rs 7.4 billion in e-payment revenue. In the dry port of Birgunj, revenue collection by e-payment began in December 2021.

On January 26, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma launched an e-payment system in all customs offices around the country. In collaboration with Nepal Clearing House and several banks and financial organizations, the department began collecting revenue through electronic payment.

This arrangement, according to the clearinghouse, has made revenue collection easier for both importers and exporters. The Customs Department’s payment collection will be gathered in both real-time and non-real-time under the National Payment Switch. As of mid-December, the department had collected Rs. 4 billion and had collected Rs. 3.4 billion in real-time through the retail payment switch.

Import taxes, VAT, excise duty, and other taxes collected at customs checkpoints throughout the country accounted for 44% of total revenue. Similarly, the government has made a 50% contribution to the tax.
