Suizhong county in the coastal city of Huludao, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province announced punishments for officials on Tuesday, for neglecting their duties in the latest COVID-19 outbreak, which started on February 8.
The officials being punished include the heads of the Suizhong health commission and commercial bureau as well as market regulation officials. Some officials were given a “serious warning” or removed from office or demoted.
The truck drivers surnamed He and Han who triggered this round of the outbreak and were suspected of hindering the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, have been put under investigation by local police, according to the Suizhong authorities. The pharmacy and clinics involved are also being handled according to the regulations.
Huludao reported 28 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking the total number of infections in its latest outbreak to 89 since February 8.
The latest resurgence occurred in Huludao’s Suizhong county, which has conducted mass testing on all residents to screen the potential risk and prevent the further spread of the virus.
The city on Saturday advised residents to stay at home. For those who have to go out, it was advised that they avoid public transportation such as buses and taxies. Driving, cycling and walking were encouraged instead.
Entertainment venues such as chess and card rooms, theaters, internet cafes and training institutions have been closed temporarily. Large gatherings are also not allowed, according to the local authorities.
According to the Huludao health commission, the outbreak was caused by people returning from other places to visit relatives during the holidays.
