The Election Commission is consulting IT experts on the possibility of using electronic machines

Kathmandu, February 9, 2022

The Election Commission, which is busy preparing for the local elections, is discussing the
possibility of electronic voting with information technology experts today.

Spokesperson of the Commission Shaligram Sharma Poudel said that IT experts of the
Government of Nepal have been invited to the Commission to seek their opinion on the
possibility of electronic voting. He informed that experts have been called for discussion at 1 pm today.

”Electronic voting can be done in some places across the country, even if it is not possible. In one or two districts, there is a possibility that it is in the city or in the municipality,” he said.

The Commission has been discussing the possibility of using electric machines in the
Kathmandu Valley. A task force has been formed to study the possibility.

The task force has been asked to study the economic and technical aspects and submit a report within a year. The Commission is ready to move forward by reaching a political consensus if it seems appropriate from an economic and technical point of view to use electronic machines.

The government has already decided to hold local elections on Baishak 30.
