Source of fresh coronavirus outbreak in Yuzhou not ‘fully identified’: authorities

The source of the latest epidemic outbreak in Yuzhou, Central China’s Henan Province, has not been “fully identified,” said local authorities late Wednesday.

Yuzhou reported 50 local confirmed COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a daily number only behind that of Xi’an, the city being shut down by the government to blunt a latest round of coronavirus onslaught in the country.

Of the 50 newly confirmed cases, 20 are asymptomatic cases diagnosed previously.

Shi Genzhi, party secretary of Xuchang, the city in charge of Yuzhou, said at a Wednesday conference that the virus prevention and control work in Yuzhou remains elusive given that the source of the outbreak remains murky.

He also urged the local government to step up efforts by increasing frequency of conducting nucleic acid tests among residents and strengthen traffic restriction in the city.

Yuzhou has launched a city-wide nucleic acid testing on Thursday.

All villages, communities and key public transit points in Yuzhou have set up checkpoints to take the temperatures of people entering and check their health codes.

The city first reported COVID-19 infections in the fresh winter outbreak in Henan on Sunday.

Henan saw 64 local confirmed cases within 24 hours on Wednesday, surpassing Northwest China’s Shaanxi to become the province with the highest number of daily cases in China.

In addition to Yuzhou, other five cities in Henan, including capital city Zhengzhou, have also reported new COVID-19 infections.
