Twelve killed in stampede at Indian shrine

At least 12 people have been killed in a stampede at an Indian religious site as tens of thousands of pilgrims gather to worship, local officials say.

At least 12 people have been killed and at least 15 others injured in a stampede on the way to Vaishnodevi temple in Indian-administered Kashmir. Four of the injured are in critical condition.

Every year millions of people visit and worship Vaishnodevi here, which is considered by Indian Hindus as a place of special religious significance.

Local officials said the alleged rift between the two groups of youths and the rush for New Year’s Day were the main reasons behind the incident.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the incident and offered his condolences to the family of the victim. The relatives of the deceased will be given Rs 200,000 and the injured will be given Rs 50,000 as relief.
