Shanghai residents expected to access public transportation and venues using a single QR code

Shanghai residents are expected to use a single QR code for public transportation as well as when entering public venues; the city’s health QR code and transportation QR codes will be integrated, Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission announced on Monday.

At present, local residents have to scan multiple QR codes using different mobile applications to take buses and metros, and enter public venues by showing their green health QR code.

In order to enhance the convenience of public travel, Shanghai launched researches to integrate the city’s three codes into one, according to media reports.

Related departments including the local transportation commission, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group and Shanghai Jiushi (Group) Co have formed a joint working group to put forward the integration work, according to Li Zheliang, director of the technology and information department of Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission.

The integrated QR code will be based on the QR code standard issued by the Ministry of Transport, and the QR code system of the metro’s turnstile gates will be modified.

As scheduled, Shanghai Municipal Big Data Center has completed the R&D and produced the health code, and Jiushi launched the upgrade of terminals and software of the buses and ferry boats in early August.

The city’s health QR code is expected to be piloted and applicable to some of the city’s bus and ferry lines around the National Day holidays and applicable on the city’s maglev line and some metro lines including Line 1, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18 by the end of this year.
