The water amount of about 37 West Lakes was poured into an East China city Yuyao over the past three days after Typhoon In-Fa made landfall twice along coastal cities in East China’s Zhejiang Province.
The accumulated rainfall in Dalan town in Yuyao, Ningbo city, Zhejiang Province reached 951 millimeters between 8 am Thursday and 6 am Monday morning.
Such amount of rainfall is roughly equal to the total water amount in about 37 West Lakes, the scenic spot in Hangzhou, Zhejiang with an area of 6.38 square kilometers and a storage capacity of 14 million cubic meters of water.
The amount of rainfall also broke the record for the rainfall caused by typhoons making landfall in Zhejiang.
A video widely circulating on China’s social media platforms on Monday morning shows that a river overflowed the levee and poured into a village along the river in Yuyao.
Typhoon In-fa made landfall for the second time along the coast of Pinghu, Jiaxing in Zhejiang around 9:50 am Monday morning, packing winds of up to 28 meters per second near its center.
Zhejiang Province Hydrology Management Center escalated its flood warning to orange at 9 am on Monday and many cities and counties including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing and Zhuji are expected to face flooding hazards.
Besides, the Department of Water Resources of Zhejiang Province issued warnings of mountain torrents on 7 am on Monday, saying that a bunch of cities and counties in the province are likely to suffer from mountain torrents.
Affected by the typhoon, the average rainfall in Ningbo city was 108.8 millimeters between 8 am on Sunday and 8 am on Monday, with the maximum amount of rainfall in Yuyao being 239 millimeters. The single rainwater measuring station with the maximum of rainfall of 505 millimeters was in Xiajialing, Yuyao.
The local forecast bureau predicted that there still will be heavy rains or storms in some parts of Ningbo on Monday.
The Ningbo Lishe International Airport issued an emergency announcement on Monday morning that all flights will continue to be canceled on Monday. The recovery of flights will be announced later.
While Zhejiang authorities have escalated their warnings toward the influence of the typhoon on the province, Shanghai, which is near the landfall location of the typhoon, has lowered its warning levels.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau lowered its storm warning to blue around 11 am on Monday, saying the heavy precipitation clouds have weakened. But the authority predicted that the city will still see about 50 millimeters of cumulative rainfall during a period of six hours in the next 24 hours.
Due to the weakened typhoon influence, flight operations gradually resume at Shanghai’s two airports based on the changes of weather conditions.
