Qingyuan city in South China’s Guangdong Province reported an asymptomatic case of COVID-19 related to an imported case on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old asymptomatic woman surnamed Tong is a nurse working at the isolation area with closed-loop management of the infection department of the Qingyuan City People’s Hospital. She participated in nursing an imported COVID-19 patient surnamed Peng on July 14 and 15.
During the period of her work, Tong was under closed-loop management, lived alone in a single room, and took nucleic acid tests every day.
She first tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday and tested positive again on Monday.
Sequencing analysis on the novel coronavirus gene from Tong shows that It was highly homologous with the coronavirus found in the imported case of Peng, both belonging to the “alpha” variant strain.
Tong was determined to be an asymptomatic infected person imported from abroad after expert consultation combined with comprehensive clinical manifestations, epidemiological investigation and laboratory test results.
Tong was transferred with closed-loop management to Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital for quarantine and treatment.
As of 6 am on Tuesday, Qingyuan city has preliminarily identified six close contacts, 17 secondly close contacts, and 2,206 key screening personnel. All their test results came back negative. All 166 samples collected from the environment tested negative.
Meanwhile, Qingcheng district in Qingyuan will conduct nucleic acid tests on permanent residents in the designated areas of Fengcheng community, including the Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Qingyuan city between 7 am and 11 am on Tuesday.
