Reporting system launched in Shanghai to encourage residents to participate in tobacco control

With big data technology, people in Shanghai are encouraged to participate in tobacco control and build a smoke-free city via a reporting system launched in Shanghai on Monday.

Shanghai residents can now report problems related to tobacco control in public venues including office buildings, shopping malls and dining places with the launch of the “tobacco control thermal map.”

Violations against tobacco control regulations, such as smoking in indoor smoking-free venues can be reported to the system via the “No Smoking Shanghai” public account on WeChat or Healthcare Cloud mobile application.

Besides this, people are welcomed to report other tobacco control information such as whether ashtrays were provided at venues and whether there were obvious smoking ban signs, and whether there were tobacco advertisements present.

According to the office of the Shanghai Health Promotion Commission, with big data technology, the “map” can dynamically display summaries of tobacco control problems provided by local residents, Jiemian News reported. The “map” can mark the frequencies and numbers of the venues which are reported by residents with different colors, serving as a reminder and warning to the public.

Meanwhile, the platform will regularly release problematic venues to strengthen social and public supervision over them in terms of management, consolidation and rectification on tobacco control, to ensure that everyone takes action and participates in building a smoke-free city.
