3 Chinese banks join Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem, boosting its commercialization

Following Huawei’s formal launch of HarmonyOS 2.0 on June 2, three Chinese banks took the lead to announce support and intent to integrate the domestically-developed operating system.

Bank of China said on Friday that it will cooperate with Huawei to launch the Atomic Services of banknote reservations in HarmonyOS system. Consumers can make reservations by searching for the app in the Service Center, without the need to download or install any new programs, making it easier and more convenient to access functions.

On the same day, China Guangfa Bank Credit Card Center said that its app is compatible to HarmonyOS. In addition, the bank has set up an online HarmonyOS zone, where consumers can buy Huawei devices that use the system.

China CITIC Bank Credit Card also rolled out credit cards that support HarmonyOS to streamline application and payment processes.

Besides, Xiamen, East China’s Fujian Province-based open-source development engine for games said that its upcoming Cocos Creator 3.2 engine will support HarmonyOS, the first game engine to do so worldwide.

Defined as a smart device operating system for the era of the Internet of Things, HarmonyOS is expected to provide a revolutionary software platform that works across devices and home appliances, capable of passing digital files between phones, tablets, TVs, computers instantly. But challenges lie on how could Huawei build an ecosystem based on the HarmonyOS that relies on millions of app developers and hundreds of millions of end users.

Huawei said that it has donated all of its core structure for HarmonyOS to the “Open Atom Open Source Foundation” from where interested manufacturers can obtain the operating system’s codes and develop product according to their need. There are more than 500,000 developers working with HarmonyOS and more will join the system soon, Huawei said.
