Driver ‘takes revenge on society’ due to investment failure by driving into crowd, killing 5

A driver drove his car into a crowd, killing five people and injuring five others in Dalian, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Saturday. Local police said he committed the crime as an act of revenge on the society after an investment failure.

The suspect driver, surnamed Liu, sought revenge on the society after an investment failure, said Qu Bo, a deputy director general of the Dalian Public Security Bureau at a press conference on Sunday.

At about 11:40 am on Saturday, when Liu was driving his BMW car along Tangshan Street to the intersection of Wuhui Road, he suddenly accelerated to 108 kilometers per hour within seven seconds, rushed through red lights and rammed into passers-by, causing five deaths and five injuries. The speed limit of the road is 60 kilometers per hour, according to police investigation.

The investigation ruled out drunk driving, drug-driving or psychiatric illness as the cause. The police officer said that the suspect was clear in mind when he committed the crime.

The suspect is now under criminal detention on the charge of endangering public safety by dangerous methods. An investigation into the case is still underway.
