António Guterres, secretary-general of the UN, has sent a congratulatory letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping to congratulate him on China’s scoring of a “complete victory” in its fight against poverty.

In his letter, Guterres told Xi that such great achievement has made great contributions to the UN-proposed 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Guterres said that he admires Xi’s far-sighted vision and great leadership.

In late February, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said absolute poverty had been eradicated in China, the world’s most populous country.

China’s magnificent accomplishment brings hope and inspiration to international society, said Guterres, noting that this achievement proves that a government’s political promise and stable policies play vital role in improving the situation for the poorest and most fragile groups; and also provides a great opportunity for innovation-driven, green and open development.

Guterres believes that China will continue to score more and bigger accomplishments, and realize the goal of “leaving no one behind.”
