Hong Kong radio host Giggs arrested on suspicion of seditious intent

The Hong Kong radio host known as Giggs was again arrested by the National Security Department of Hong Kong police on Sunday on suspicion of having behavior with seditious intent, making him another media figure to be arrested on charges related to national security after media mogul Jimmy Lai.

The Global Times learned from the Hong Kong police that a 52-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in violation of Article 10 of the Crimes Ordinance following local media reports that the above-mentioned radio host was arrested again on Sunday.

Giggs, whose real name is Wan Yiu-sing, together with his wife and his personal assistant were arrested in November 2020 on suspicion of money laundering and funding others to split the country, HK media reported.

Police said they found some people had launched a funding campaign on social media platforms in February 2020, and supported those who had intentions of splitting the country.

Lai was formally charged under the national security law for Hong Kong on December 11, 2020, which is widely seen as a high-profile case, as the 72-year-old has been considered a “modern-day traitor” for his infamous acts and deeds in instigating one of the most violent and chaotic riots in the city in 2019.

Previously, a producer involved with a Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) documentary about the 2019 Yuen Long mob attacks was arrested on November, 2020.

Police chief Chris Tang Ping-keung said on Tuesday that following the enactment of the National Security Law in June 2020, Hong Kong police ha arrested 97 people on suspicion of including splitting the country, subversion of state power and collusion with foreign powers.
