Stricter rules for passengers taking direct flights to Beijing

Travelers on direct flights to Beijing from Canada will face stricter rules relevant local authorities imposed to control the entry of third-country transit travelers through direct international flights, according to a notice posted on Saturday on the website of the Chinese embassy in Canada.

The measure may mark Beijing’s strengthened efforts to prevent the importation of COVID-19 following a resurgence of local coronavirus cases.

According to the notice, passengers on direct international flights to Beijing from Canada shall be only Canadian citizens and Chinese citizens in Canada.

The notice advises against passengers from third countries traveling to China via Canada as the Chinese Embassy and Consulate-Generals in Canada will not issue green health codes for travelers who intend to take a direct flight to Beijing if they could not meet the requirements.

It also requires relevant airlines to remind and discourage third-country travelers from transiting to Beijing in Canada during ticket sales and check-in.

The website of the Chinese embassy in India posted a similar notice on Saturday.

The Beijing municipal government announced on Tuesday to strictly control third country travelers entering Beijing through direct flights.
