Hua Chunying, a spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry and director-general of the ministry’s Information Department, has been nominated for a national-level commendation for her part in the fight against COVID-19, as an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Hua’s nomination was announced in an online notice from the organization department of the CPC Central Committee and a working committee of state organs on Wednesday, along with over 100 individuals and Party members from all walks of life including doctors, scientists and reporters.
Observers said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s stage is the frontline to fight against an overseas “political virus” amid the pandemic, and that Hua, who has worked indefatigably at press briefings to disprove and fight back against the slandering of China’s efforts in containing the virus, has certainly merited her nomination.
The nomination has become a hot topic online, with over 130 million views on Sina Weibo as of press time. Many internet users believe the role of Foreign Ministry spokesperson is crucial in the fight against COVID-19 as it involves correcting misinformation and maintaining the national image.
The nomination announcement period will continue until August 12. Nominations announced thus far include 45 outstanding groups and organizations, 135 outstanding individuals, and 20 Party members.
