Chengdu giant panda breading base receives heaviest newborn

Two female panda cubs were born on Friday at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, with one setting the record for heaviest newborn at a jaw-dropping 219 grams, according to the facility.

The two chubby panda baby girls are healthy and energetic, read a press release that the Chengdu base sent to the Global Times on Monday.

One of the cubs weighed 172.6 grams and the other weighed 219 grams, which is the “heaviest one” since the facility started keeping records.

Their mothers, Yuanrun and Aili, displayed strong maternal instincts and have been taking good care of the cubs.

A total of five cubs were born in the Chengdu base this year, three of which were males and two females.
