The Gothic-style Quadrangle building at the University of Sydney has attracted visits from thousands of Chinese tourists because of its striking similarity to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.

“Our tour guide told us that this is where one of the scenes of Harry Potter was filmed,” a Chinese tourist told Sing Tao Daily during an interview at the campus. Despite the resemblance of the Quadrangle to Hogwarts, no part of the Harry Potter films were shot in Australia. The real-life Hogwarts is actually Durham Cathedral in Britain.

Jamie Fraser, the senior curator of the Nicholson Museum inside the Quadrangle building, said he had noticed a significant rise in the number of visiting Chinese tourists. “The number of Chinese tourists for the campus increased by 4,000 people from 2017 to 2019,” he said.
