A man in his sixties, armed with a rifle, killed one person and wounded five others in the Corsican capital Bastia on Wednesday, before holing himself up in the building where he lives, police said.

One police officer was among those injured as the assailant, who has a criminal record, opened fire in the building and on the street in mid-afternoon.

The authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive, according to sources close to the enquiry who said police were initially called out to deal with a dispute between neighbors.

“In total six people were shot, one of whom has died,” said local prosecutor Caroline Tharot.

The dead man was described as a local public housing official on the French Mediterranean island.

Police said the injured officer was shot in the neck and taken to hospital.

The shooter was no stranger to Corsica’s courts, having twice been convicted of armed violence offences, the prosecutor said.

The area was sealed off by police and authorities urged local residents to act with caution. Several residents remained in the building where the attacker lived and took refuge.

“A gunman fired on passersby before withdrawing to his home. Please avoid the area,” the prosecutor’s office said on Twitter.
