Pre-prepared meals of the kind where the ingredients are prepared and just need to be cooked are increasingly popular among young people for their Chinese New Year’s Eve dinners. According to Xinhua, this season’s sales of pre-prepared meals on Tmall are 16 times greater than last year.

People born in the 1980s and 1990s are the main customers for these meals, according to a report from Tmall, Alibaba’s business-to-consumer online marketplace. Tmall said that young people enjoy entertaining guests at home, but also value convenience.

The report said that pre-prepared meals are most popular among city dwellers, especially those in the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China. Residents living inland reportedly have a preference for seafood. And younger customers prefer meals with ingredients imported from overseas.
