A pedestrian received a fine because she used her cellphone while she was walking along a road in the city of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province on Monday, according to a report of Wenzhou Evening News.

The woman, surnamed Wu, was fine 10 yuan ($1.48) by a local traffic police officer. It was the first fine after a new local regulation took effect January 1.

According to the new regulation adopted by the city’s legislature in November, pedestrians will be warned or fined 10 yuan if they play with their cellphones while crossing a road or block pedestrians or vehicles. The regulation seeks to improve citizens’ awareness of traffic safety.

Nowadays it is a familiar phenomenon that people play with their smartphones when they walk on the roads. However, the traffic police consider the behavior can cause dangers for pedestrians themselves or others.
