21 miners dead in NW China

The death toll from a collapse at a coal mine in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province has risen to 21. This, after two miners who were trapped underground were confirmed dead on Sunday morning, reports CCTV.

The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday after a roof collapsed at the Lijiagou coal mine, which is being operated by Baiji Mining in the city of Shenmu.

87 people were working underground at the time.

66 were pulled to safety following the collapse.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
