On Wednesday morning, Peng Liyuan, the wife of China’s President Xi Jinping, accompanied by Spain’s Queen Letizia, paid a visit to the Royal Theater in central Madrid.
Arriving at the theater, they were met by Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sports José Guirao, along with the chairman of the Royal Theater Foundation and the theater’s general manager.
Peng Liyuan was given an introduction to the theater’s history and culture, before being treated to a rehearsal of the opera “Turandot”. Afterwards, she met with members of the cast and wished them well for their first performance of the new season. She spoke highly of the importance of art as a medium that crosses national boundaries, and shared her hopes that China and Spain will continue their cooperation in the field of the arts.
Built in 1818, the Royal Theater is one of Spain’s leading performance venues. In 2016, the theater joined the Silk Road International League of Theaters.
