Directly-elected presidential system needed: Maoist Centre Chair Prachanda

Kathmandu, Sept. 21:

The CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has reiterated his party’s demand for a directly-elected presidential system and a complete proportional electoral system.

Addressing the political-ideological training programme organized by the All Nepal Trade Union Federation here Saturday, the Maoist Centre Chairman said that the party’s proposal as a dissenting view put during the time of constitution drafting will be revived now.

Arguing that some forces were displeased with the rights enjoyed by the people through the current constitution, Dahal claimed that such forces were attempting to snatch away the rights of people in the name of the constitution’s amendment.

“Amendment efforts of this constitution without the consent of the Maoist party is not acceptable. No one has the right to amend the constitution without our consensus,” he added.

He, however, made it clear that his party was ready for amendment if sincere efforts were made for the statute amendment. The Maoist party is desperate to amend the constitution for a progressive path ahead, Prachanda stated.

On the occasion, he claimed that the political corruption happening in the country is due to the existing electoral system and argued that this should be changed into a total proportional electoral system.

Chief of the CPN (Maoist Centre) Labourer Department Jayapuri Gharti and Federation’s Chairman Jagat Simkhada called for ensuring rights to the working class people.
