Kathmandu, May 8
Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, is apparently planning to resign.
According to those close to him, he was on the edge of resigning from his position as the country’s economic and political problems deepened.
After the protests started, he came under great pressure to resign, arguing that the Rajapaksa-led administration was the root of the political and economic crises.
Protesters have also put pressure on President Mahinda to dismiss him. He is said to be
planning to retire because if he does not, the movement would expand.
In view of the rising protests and the implementation of the state of emergency, the President and Prime Minister met at the President’s residence to consider the future actions. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to quit during the negotiations.
Following the country’s economic crisis, inflation and shortages have risen. People who were upset by the high costs and shortages started the movement. Following the protests, the government imposed a state of emergency. After demonstrators demanded the government’s dismissal, all ministries save the prime minister resigned.
All ministers have been re-appointed, with the exception of the Prime Minister, but no real
outcomes have been achieved.
