China has been advised not to get too close to Russia by the director of Britain’s intelligence agency. China has been advised not to go too close to Russia, which is attacking Ukraine, by Sir Jeremy Fleming, the head of the GCHQ’s cyber intelligence branch.
Sir Fleming, who is currently in Australia, stated in a rare public lecture at the Australian
National University in Canberra that an alliance with Russia would not be in China’s long-term interests, according to the BBC.
He further said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aides had misled him. He went on to say that Putin seemed unconcerned about the situation in Ukraine.
He said that a close relationship with Russia’s leadership, which ”deliberately and unlawfully disregards” international law, would not achieve China’s long-term ambition to be a world leader.
Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met in a
‘friendly environment’ for discussions.
