Phanindra Nepal Arrested for Kalapani Election Protest

Kathmandu : Greater Nepal Nationalist Front’s chair Phanindra Nepal Arrested After Banner Protest Outside Election Commission.

Kathmandu: Police on Monday arrested Phanindra Nepal, the founder of the Greater Nepal Nationalist Front, after he staged a banner protest outside the Election Commission demanding that elections also be held in the Kalapani region.

According to police sources, Nepal was taken into custody shortly after he displayed a banner calling on authorities to conduct elections in Kalapani, a territory included in Nepal’s official map but currently under dispute.

Nepal argued that areas incorporated into Nepal’s national map must not be excluded from the electoral process. He maintained that failing to conduct elections in Kalapani would undermine the country’s territorial claim and constitutional position.

The protest took place outside the office of the Election Commission in Kathmandu. Police intervened and detained Nepal for what they described as a public demonstration without prior authorization.

The Kalapani region has remained a sensitive territorial issue between Nepal and India. In 2020, Nepal unveiled a new political map that includes Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura within its borders, intensifying diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
